"He wants you to be her..."
this is what the shrink
said to me, in an aside.
I started protest
but aborted the thought--
then clamped my teeth
on lower lip,
and asked him to explain.

"All the rage
his fury compounded
roils inside of him,
the restlessness--
that "eye of remembering"
is what you will see,
narrow gaze
and clenched jaw,
watch his shoulders
tighten
and fingers curl to fist...
these are the signs, I tell you!
These are your red flags
of warning that
you must get out of the house."

"Why?"
(I didn't mean to wail)
a sound so unlike myself
I looked for someone else in pain.
He sighed and I saw sympathy
as he replied:

"'Mother' is the Goddess,
and the inert return to home.
He can't allow that hatred, hearth--
to do so would deny
all that is sacred in himself."

"When he hits you, he's killing her."

Silence spoke my understanding,
although the knowledge
did not change
the bitter pill
stuck now in my throat.
I knew that reality
was going to be there a long time.

"You can't change what happened to him,"
the good doc said to me.
"But you can change
what happens to you."

Oh dear mother of his...
I heard those words
ten years ago
and still tonight
I wait and watch
in fear.

Happy Mother's Day--MOTHER-

Geez Serenity this packed one heck of a punch!  I got from all this the one message that means the answer to end most abuse

"But you can change
what happens to you."

Wow!  This was great!

Aren't MOTHERS wonderful?
They find all manner of ways to destroy their children.
No broad indictment intended here, just decades of personal experience.
(Sorry, have to unload just a little once in awhile.)

Enjoyed the read even so.

Heartwrenching write.  I second Mysteria in her praise of your lines:

"But you can change
what happens to you."

Thanks for posting this, Serenity.  No relationship is better than an abusive relationship.
