Adventures of Ian
(The Value of a Woman)

When Ian met Mary at the dance she had talked to him about taking some dancing lessons.
Mary was enrolled at the Swing Time Dance Studio and she wouldn't mind having a steady partner.
And Ian would do just fine...in fact Ian had jumped at the chance.
He was always up for a new challenge and this would give him plenty of time in her presence and in her arms.
What better way to get to know her then cheek to cheek.
Ian was thinking about inviting Mary to his Kung Fu class.
But it was lots of hard work and he wasn't sure if he could focus with Mary so close at hand.
Maybe later on he would calm down around Mary and he could have her there.
For now he felt like a part of that Karen Carpenter song "Close To You".
"Why do birds suddenly appear~everytime you are near~~just like me they long to be close to you."
But he knew all new things become familar and he felt he would be more balanced in six months or so.
And that would be fine with Ian because as much as he liked Mary he was determined to stay focused on his goals.
Which were to become an adventurer and a world traveler.
He thought perhaps he would pursue a career as a travel agent working for a major airlines or perhaps an independent travel writer.
But then does anyone really know exactly what they want to do for the rest of their life when they are seventeen and interested in so many diverse things.
He knew one day he would know for sure his lifes call but that day had not arrived as of yet.
When it did surely he would be the first to know.
For now all he knew was that he was never bored and he had never been happier.
For he could feel love coming his way from two Mary's (his Mom and girlfriend) and these things were very important to him.
To love and to be loved and the magic of a kiss.
That evening at the dance when Mary had kissed him it was like a whole new world was opening for his pursuit and pleasure.
And he was missing the world of kissing ever since he had received his first kiss from that young girl in his neighborhood.
He liked to describe kissing in a few choice words...simply devine.
Wasn't this one of the major reasons women were created?
They were much more thatn Mom's or Grandma's.
They could also be romantic sexy creatures and thus we are assured that mankind will multiply.
It seems that Ian was wiser then some would give him credit for.
He knew the value of a friendship and the importance of communication in a relationship.
He knew the true value of a woman was found in much more than just a kiss.
But than who could resist a kiss or for that matter who could resist his Mom's freshly squeezed lemonade...not Ian.
He knew someday he would travel the world and never find a glass of lemonade filled with as much love as his Mom's.
Ian felt blessed.

James,
this is very well written, but shouldn't it be in prose. Just wondering?

I'm not sure I agree with the narrator or Ian on several points. An interesting forray into the budding warped misogynistic mind. I'm willing to go out on a limb and assert that this is not a poem... just strangely broken prose.

First time I've read anything this troubling here at PIP. (Not to offend others who write troubling stuff, this is just my first.) Literature isn't only about warm fuzzies... the odd cold shiver is necessary.

Again, very interesing read.
