(This is a repost..but my feeling is, it is timely..and in the ashes of my past, there is still the need to speak)

The Haunting Book

Memories ignite,  as I open a worn book
covered with dust.

Just a book, my fears,
which hid in it so many years ago,
certainly not something that happened
in this cloistered place
where children danced.

Just a book of pictures.

Its story is old,
I can tell by the black and whites
and the pages full of the
cunning cruelty of secrets
that feel like dead skin.

Only pages, I think to myself,
and turn them one by one.

I see how someone has taken a brush of color
and blushed cheeks and lips.
The eyes brown that were blue,
blue as the starch
that stiffened his collars.
The truth was
also painted over.

I know this now.

I close the book,
the dust, falling around me.

Where does his despair sleep
after it has stolen innocence?

Perhaps his heart cannot feel the anguish
that mine has come to know.

Mine will sleep locked in this book of time
that I now toss upon the fireplace embers.

An outstanding write, Martie.  I really love it and feel the words deeply.  It's a keeper, and now my favourite.

Take care,
Melissa~

Funny, how those memories
seem to rise warm from the
flames...

smiling with you
and holding hands...

Martie, very gentle smile..somethings are meant to be thrown to the embers to bring forth some soothing light, brought by the cleansing of the fire..a very good write in itself and very thought provoking...

I hope for you that there are many warm and
wonderful memories to replace some of the
ones that were felt from the book.

You penned your feelings very well.  Thank

I have many wonderful memories, yes Barry..not to worry.  My book of good is so full that it falls out into the room.  You must have seen it smiling a time or two.  Thanks all for your replies.

Martie...A haunting poem that I can identify with.  When all there is left is pictures, stolen memories. Outstanding writing, indeed!!!  ***Ivy Rose
