Poet’s Anonymous

I went to see my doctor
Just the other day;
He took one look, then shook his head,
And quickly had his say.
“It seems you are addicted
To silly words that rhyme.
You need to break the habit now,
There is no better time!
I can help you though this.
I’ve got the perfect cure.
They meet at Eight each Tuesday night
Up on the second floor.”

On Tuesday night, that very week,
I stood outside a door
With the words Poet’s Anonymous
Scrawled on the sign it bore.
They promised they could help me
Get through my wordly lust.
They handed me their twelve step plan
And shook my hand in trust.
They gave me my own mentor.
They said he was my peer;
A funny man who smiled at me,
Then said, “I’m Balladeer.”

He pointed out a seat for me,
Took his, and through his tears
Said, “I have been an addict now
For nigh on twenty years.
I used to be a working man
With children and a wife;
Until the words consumed my days
And ruined my whole life.
It started, oh, so innocent
A poem here and there.
I read the classics like Robert Frost,
Browning and Will Shakespeare.
I read them in the parking lot;
Snuck them home in paper bags;
Then started reading less known poets
Like LongJohn and Toerag.
I logged onto the Internet.
Read and wrote on my lunch hours.
I had to get my daily fix;
Lost all of my willpower!”
His hands were shaking as he spoke.
He broke into a sweat.
He whispered so no one could hear,
“I’m still an addict yet.
You see, I found this poet’s site
That has a hold of me.
A haven on the Internet
Called Passions In Poetry.
It’s not too late for you, you know.
You’re new to this I see.
For me there is no life at all,
If not for poetry!”

I laughed and winked, turned towards the group
All caught in their own hell;
Then stared straight in this poor man’s face,
Begged for the URL.
He handed me a slip of paper.
I watched his features slack,
Then walked out of that door that night
And never did go back.

I’m still addicted to this day.
There is no cure for me.
And as for Balladeer....we meet,
Each day on P I P.

I was enjoying this wonderful poem so much I didn't want it to ever end! *S* But then... it doesn't really end, does it? *S* Months and years of meetings are archived... to be savored again and again. *S*

I love this, hoot! *S*

Ruth darling girl as always you write with such skill and wonderment this is excellent writing from you. Exquisite flow and the rhyme are utterly utterly spectacular This poem has some of the funniest lines I’ve read it made me smile a lot, the form is utterly utterly divine, and I love it I truly do.

Utterly utterly utterly perfect

Love and warm stuff

Splendid, splendid Ruthy girl, I needed that today
I wonder what 'ol' Balladeer, on this will shortly say.
But you are not the only ones, that are addicted dear
Like spiders in a sticky web, PIP caught all poets here.

I'm Titia and I'm a poetry PIP addict

Hi I'm Ruth and I'm an addict...
Ah, but there are far worse things we could be addicted to right?
Thanks everyone for the kind replies and I can't think of a better "self-help group" to belong to than PIP

Martie...LOL...right, keep telling yourself that

Oh Hoot!  See, I told ya you were a hoot girl!  This was priceless.  Heck I went there, and as you noticed they said my problems weren't big enough to join (shoot if they had let me in I wouldn't have this terrible affliction of a tapping foot!) Girl, you're good, and I miss you big time! Huge hugs and add me to ICQ will ya? Or MSN or something, i miss you.

That was too much fun. But I don't think I'm addic -- MORE! GIMME MORE! I just ... please. Please. You don't understand. What I've been through. I ... oh God ... just one more taste, that's all. That's it. I'm done. I'm finished. Just ... MOOOOORE!

Erm, liked it.

This is delightful !

I've been through the twelve-step program
and it's starting to sink in
I realize that it all was lies
I'm still addicted to the pen~

So true...I suppose its better to be addicted to poetry than to alcohol or drugs...if you write more than a six pack a week you're probably addicted....James

Ruth,
What a HOOT! I don't dare let my wife see this. She'd try to make me attend those meetings. Since I don't have a problem it would be a complete waste of time. ROTFL Just awesome.

Ruth, do you know if they hold these meetings up here in Canada?
Not that I need them of course...
I mean I can go, um, maybe 6 hours without having to click onto the blue pages.
(That's a week!)
Pretty good...no?
Loved this and thanks for the chuckles!

Hey, Hoot! The only thing you have to apologize to me for is from saying I read LongJohn and Toerag! I may be addicted but not to dopes!

LOVE the poem!

Well, I may be addicted
But it's not self-inflicted
I have to say the Devil made me do it.
He took that Passions site
And filled it with delight
In such a way that I had to pursue it!

With poetry to sigh for
And ladies I would die for
There simply aren't enough hours in the day!
So send my mail to Passions
And feed me some C-rations
'Cause, gal, it looks like I am here to stay.

I take a step
and back again
somewhere I left
my trusty pen

Another step
then back, renewed
I need to grab
a poet or two

Try again,
if I must
to step away
from those I trust

Nope, nada, can't be done
for I shan't leave anyone
this is where the poets roam
PiP, my home, write, home
