Sonnet of the Birds

The sweetest sound my heart has ever heard
Is in the darkness of the early morn
When dogwood limb is perch for springtime bird
To warble out the joys that have been born

New life, new light, new warmth upon the earth
Has brought this friend from winter’s feeding ground
Fulfilling nature’s deed of greatest worth
Ensuring that his feathered wing abound

All species gather in the bush and limb
Before the breaking blueness of the dawn
And twitter out the most enchanting hymn
Before the sun has touched the green of lawn

Wake up! Come listen to the chorus sing
Its daily morning madrigal of spring
