I thought I was a mountain range.
Was not even a rock on that hill.
Not even a pebble in that valley.

I thought I was a hard gemstone,
no light filtered through my veins
unborrowed. I was never mined nor spent.

I thought I was a river rock,
underwater surface lain
in shade. I was never scraped by oar.

I thought I was a hopskotch stone:
smooth and small, so sweaty-useful.
I was not even their lumps of chalk.

I thought I was a beach sand speck --
crystal sparking in the sun.
I was not even the tide-brought salt.

I thought I was the dust of sand,
a part to make a desert plain.
I was not even a mountain there.

I enjoyed this...reminds me of the line in a song 'and a rock never cries'.

PDV, did you mean that Simon and Garfunkel song that goes "and a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries"?

I love that song! And I love this poem too!
