Catching Poetry

The sky was blue,
the sun was warm
and something called,
was it the wilderness?

Lets go fishing, my man said.
I smiled as he searched the garage
for poles and tackle,
then we had to buy a license…
takes time to do these
spur-of-the-moment things.

So a ten minute ride to a lake
in the middle of LA county,
can you believe it?

What a feast!
If you squinted just so
you could believe you were
far away from the city,
and it was pretty the way
the telephone wires
dissected the sky.

I didn’t catch fish,
although I had day-glow worms,
they glowed in the dark underbelly
of the lake where the big fish lurk,
at least I guess that’s what they do,

but I did catch some poetry.

Poetry, in the line of maple trees
across the top of the green hills,
and in the speed-dive of the terns,
poetry in the graceful flight of heron
and in the gentle nesting of the ducks.

The birds were a symphony
punctuated by a splash
as a fish jumped
right by my descending dangling
tasty green worm.

A kite trysted with the air
with fairy wings
and children somewhere added
just the right delicious joy.

Did it matter that the man
standing nearby fly casting
caught a twelve inch bass
and threw it back?
no, of course not

cause, I caught poetry.

After I read this I went to look at the pictures you sent me of you fishing, and the smile alone told me you also "caught some poetry" that day as well.  Martie, you do so make me smile, for you my dear catch poetry in everything!  Lovely this was.

We should spend less time worrying about when our life is going to end and more on when it's going to start!
