northern mountains, Idaho

We hiked the mile up the mountain
from us, to buy the old couple’s little tractor.
Now that he was sick, and they were selling,
they wouldn’t need it any more.

They had bought eighty acres in sixty-seven.
Raised five children up there.
They were running over with tales of their lives,
like a creek in snow-melt time.

They spoke of the man with respect;
the vet who had come home from ‘Nam
in sixty-nine, and moved
up the mountain from them

“He bought a huge culvert and buried it
underground and lived in that pipe
all alone for four years or more”, they said.

They had to call the forest ranger
one time when a bear came too near.

“The ranger wouldn’t go up there
even to get the bear”, they laughed,
“he was too leery of this guy
who would jump out of a hole in the ground,
looking as wild as an animal himself”.

They poured us some more coffee,
and we gazed out their kitchen window
over the mountain tops.

“He was a real back to nature guy,”
they said, “with a full beard and everything.
He kept to himself, never bothered anyone
that didn’t bother him; just
lived underground all alone.”

“Then, next thing you know,
we heard his mother was dying back east,
and he up and flew three thousand miles to be with her.
And he just stayed there. We guess he got used to it.

Now, we hear he’s an airline pilot!
You just never know.”

(Another true story from our new lives on the mountain.)
