A gravedigger perched over shallow hole,
He let a sigh and wiped his brow.
No one would think or ever know
Who this soul in the box was now.
It could be a statesman rich with land
Or a peasant too poor to roam
But was undoubtedly coiled in God's hand
And was now in its final home.
He mused to guess what was in the box
A child, a woman or man?
He need not open it, there were no locks
  He was a guessing man.
The box was long, not wide but tall
And it was not ornately done
He guessed it wasn't a child at all
But a much taller thinner someone.
Most women died with heirs to pay
  For funeral expense and mourn.
This box was not handled this way
  There were no markings shorn.
A criminal maybe or poor man perhaps
  The box contained a mystery
Maybe even a herder dressed in chaps
Or a figure from recent history.
It mattered not, for the worms didn't care
He would be manna for their feast
All left would be just bone and hair
And noone would mind in the least.
Still the passing of a soul, no matter the cause
  Was reason within the reason
For those passing by to take pause
And be thankful for another season.

Chivalry is not dead.  I saw it coughing up lung butter last night, but it was still alive.  I think it has parvo.

Nicely done...yes,  such a mystery within
the confines of a box...holding perhaps
so much history...
