I was requested today to write a poem that would honor the hospital and hospice volunteers. The person making the request is thrilled with the outcome. Thought I'd share it with you. It's rather fun to get a request like this, huh.

If You Were...

If you were only hands
you'd provide us many things.

If you were only lips
I'm sure your voice would sing.

If you were only ears
you could hear the words we cry.

If you were only feet
you could dance a lullaby,

but you are all these things
hands, ears, lips and feet,

and it is plain, Dear Volunteer,
our many needs you meet.

Having that be said
just might be enough,

yet there is more you do
even when it's tough.

For there is more to you,
than one can see or say,

that helps you care for us
in a hundred different ways.

For you do more than hear,
you listen thoughtfully,

you wipe away our tears
and bring laughter ardently.

Your tender touch dispels
many fears that come to us

and your footsteps beat a rhythm
that echoes "We can trust."

How do all these things occur
hour by hour, day by day?

It's because of your full heart
that shines a crystal ray.

Because we're all quite blessed
in the gifts you share, like gold,

we could not let it pass
if our thanks could not be told.

So accept our gratitude
from our heads and from our hearts.

Virginia,
Perfect...just perfect. I couldn't have said it better myself! Wow. You honored them well.

Very well done!  Not enough is said for the volunteers.  I well remember their kindness and helpfulness when I was in the hospital many moons ago.  You paid them just homage, my friend.
