In the midst of the list of things to buy,
the list of things to do--
what's for dinner?
Who's walking Bear?
We're out of rabbit food--
I think of you.

Need to believe there's a lesson in this.
Maybe this is part of it:
I love you, now,
doing nothing
but healing, and being.
Don't ask how my test went;
tell me what you need.
Now's not the time to mother me.

Even the first time I visited,
in that pale, sunken body
connected to countless tubes;
after the surgery,
after they almost lost you,
your spirit was there:

Sticking out your tongue:
the woman behind the curtain
said she'd passed gas,
graduated to solids.
Half joking the whole thing's
put you in a bad mood.

Where do you find that kind
of strength?
Wish I had been as strong
and not cried on the trip home,
or not been grateful
you covered the depth of pain
with a capable-looking face.

Each day,
another dozen calls--
some I didn't recognize
but who said they met
you once or twice--
all praying, loving,
needing you to survive.

You've touched so many souls
by your light, by your life.
That beauty
makes the whole world bloom
for those with the privilege
of knowing you.

Sure, there is healing to do.
Yes, it feels more like a violence
than any kind of gift.
But there is a lesson, damn it:
I've learned
I want to be like you.

i really liked the first stanza...it reminds me of myself on a daily basis.
