He was born, embedded,
in the clay of Texas dust.
Sonovacotton farmer--
slave to winds of trust.

He remembered the Great Depression,
as times once good gone bad...
He was the sonovacotton farmer--
he shared everything he had.

He never knew a blister.
His hands were always tough.
His hands knew rope and splintered wood.
His hands knew gentleness of love.

He learned to read in haystacks
when the feeding time was done.
Homer--Illiad--in a loft--
always reading, on the run...

He fed the chicks and milked the cows,
and he had fancy dreams...
of Zeus and Hera and the gods
and all the goddesses redeemed.

*   *   *

After his death, I kept for mine
a treasure much more dear than mink.
A New York Times crossword puzzle--
completed--in red ink.

A tribute that put me in the middle of that farm in Texas. Well done. Enjoyed!

First of all, I need to thank Rosemary for the inspiration on this--as I read her wonderful poem, and she set my mind adrift about my own father. I need to thank my Dad too.

Tim...thanks so much for continuing to read. I have missed you. (pssst...lost your e addy in the Great Computer Crash! )

James, thank you as well for the "interesting"!

Michael, you are one funny sonova...grin? I have missed you as well, my friend and mentor.

Marsha, thank you for your generosity. I appreciate it very much.

"O"--I'm so glad you caught the mood of it. My dad was a classic Texan--I'm very happy that I seemed to have captured a bit of him, for you to meet.

Enchanting one--Thanks you, sweet lady, for being ever kind. Hugs.

DS--I am enjoying your work very much. I don't reply as much as I should, because quite often you leave me speechless. So thank you for stopping in and letting me know you were here. (I'll try harder.)

Thank you all very much!

JM stole my verse, she always does that!  Fine, I'll pick another...

He remembered the Great Depression,
as times once good gone bad...
He was the sonovacotton farmer--
he shared everything he had.

K...The whole story reminded me of my grandfather.  He was one of the more 'fortunate' during the depression.  He and my grandmother, extended credit to people they knew would never be able to repay it, in the form of food from their little family owned market.  Cool poem, thanks!

I wanted to thank everyone, but I wish I could share with you how far away in my mind I am at times--I remember my Dad, talking about this, and how one day, the neighbor's children appeared in his home. He said it wasn't a big deal. They were just suddenly there, working, eating, and sleeping along side of the family, and? "nobody thought a thing of it..." he said. "It was Depression Times, so we just said grace and passed the biscuits."

Am I blessed, or what?

sigh...love you Dad.

I couldn't help but choke up as I read this... for I know this man... at least, I know some like him... change the location to Louisiana and you almost could be describing my Dad. *S*

You've written a vivid depiction, serenity... one I like very much. *S*

This poem requires some petal steel and a fine, weathered voice to sing it. I love where it goes.
