When I was six or maybe seven,
I thought I'd died and went to heaven,
My parents made the big decision,
And bought the family, a television.

Black and white with rabbit ears,
I was the envy of all my peers,
They'd come over each day at nine
And watch with me, a pal of mine.

He was a Captain, through and through,
His name of course was Kangaroo,
Mr. Green Jeans was his friend,
I wished the show would never end.

It was a joy to watch each day,
My special companion with whom to play,
When he came as company,
Each day at nine to be with me.

Then I grew up and sad to say,
I left the Captain and went away,
Now I'm a man and he has passed,
Why can't our childhoods ever last?

Last night the wind rose hard and fast,
Searching; seeking out my past,
Whistling through the backyard pine,
Calling out, lost friends of mine.

Big screen TVs, DVDs,
CD players, MP3s.
Mr. Green Jeans, Captain who?
Where have you gone? I have no clue.

Captain Kangaroo...AND Sheriff John.  In LA, we had a local television station that had it's home-grown equivalent of CK...and Sheriff John was my hero!  Captain Kangaroo was a close second...only because his makeup made him look grandfatherly, and Sheriff John was more my Dad's age....

great memories here, Tim!  Thanks so much!

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Tim, I couldn't help but cry reading this poem because I too find it so saddening to see things change so very fast and wonderifng why we can't preserve what we loved when we grew up and hold firm to tradition! I wish I could live back then to watch that show, for I bet it must have been so wonderful! I am growing up now loving Shakira, the Goo-Goo Dolls, Simpsons, and Dexter's Laboratory! (sigh) This is wonderful, sweet friend, my heart goes out to you and I hope soon they can perhaps release a DVD featuring the original episodes of the show, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Tim, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Oh my gosh, I loved this poem, I loved this show and the memories you brought back almost made me cry. When my oldest child was little, the Capt. tried to make a come-back. I was so excited that she would be able to watch and love him too. Alas, he could not compete with the fast-paced antics of Sesame Street and Big Bird. I so appreciate your letting me travel back in time. Hugs, Marti

Tim - no, they are never gone as long as we have our inner child. My favourites on the old black and white screen were Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Enjoyed! Chris

The rabbits name was "Bunny Rabbit"  I was a bit partial to Mr. Moose, although Dancing Bear was one of my favorites also.
Thanks all for the read and very gracious comments.

Great write, Tim... Oddly enough - I recall the great Captain Kangaroo as his former personna... Clarabelle the Clown... "It's Howdy Doody time, It's Howdy Doody time.." Um.. My kids recall him as Capt. though..  They're pretty old, eh??..

I enjoyed this trip down memory lane even though *gasp* I never watched the Captain. *S* Out in the middle of nowhere, my family's TV got only one station... it carried a CK knockoff with a local host who was more interested in advertising his shoe store than anything else. *S*

Great job, Tim! *S*

I moved around a lot as a kid and loved CK because he always went with us.  I couldn't imagine starting a day without him!!!  Awesome tribute!  Total kudos!  Today he wouldn't be cool to the kids, because he doesn't have guns, lazers or morph into some gigantic slime...it's sad!

This brought back memories...first, let me say, I enjoyed the rhyme ~ unforced and well done...second ~ the topic was handled very well from start to finish.

Excellent show that was, along with Mr. Roger's Neighborhood ~ my two childhood favorites.
