Whispers in the Dark

softly silent scraping sounds
leaves against window’s glass
child’s terror in the night
breathless prayers that it will pass

harsh whispers in the dark
cutting like a jagged knife
opening wounds that won’t heal
between husband and wife

sleeping child pulled awake
covers held tightly to her chin
whispers become shouts
now the fighting can begin

silent witness to the pain
of a marriage torn asunder
words like vicious storms cascade
verbal lightening, spoken thunder

Powerful, haunting images.  You have outdone yourself here I think, Sharon.

All writing comes
by the grace of God.

This reminds me of a time when my wife and
I got very mad at each other....started
shouting.....  What brought me to reality
was the fear I saw in my children's eyes...

Very sobering....and I learned right then
that parents should not fight in front of
their children....for they are the ones
who bear the pain so deeply and for so
long...

My parents never used words....they used
total silence which was just as frightening
as the opposite...

This poem brought back many memories and
much thought adn reflection.  Very well
penned words..

We don't even realize what hearts are listening..what innocent eyes are seeing our wrath..Wonderful reminder poetess.

Brought back memories of my brother and I cryin in our shared bed.Afraid and wrongly feeling some how resposible for the angry words comming from our parents room.

(big huggsssssss) Oh Sharon, this is so powerfully sad and haunting, sweet friend, my heart goes out to all children who have to overhear and experience the heartbreak of divorce and be divided from their parents! (sad sigh) This is so wonderfully said, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sharon, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Hearing their parents fight is so scary for a child. Very well expressed, Sharon.

Thank you all..your words make me smile. While I have never suffered this, I have heard so many friends talk about their lives as a 'listener of abuse'...it's sad - there is nothing worse than not being able to shut out the sound...

PdV,
Painful realities. It needs to stop...

It's never too late to have a good childhood! Woohoo!
