Lays calming silence on the lawn,
As man and beast wait come of dawn,
Shadows of the night retreating,
To hidden lairs by dark's defeating,
Last vestige of Orion's shimmer,
Cedes to glow of sun's first glimmer,
While on far hill lone whippoorwill,
Calls to all in warbled twill,
Farewell dark night, behold Lord Sun,
Arise and wake, new day's begun,
Swarming, warming, darting rays,
Onslaught of light, bejeweled displays,
Spreading westward crest to crest,
Heralder of night's arrest,
Vanished, banished, flees the night,
Splendor reigns at dawn's first light.

And then again when day's a-rest
there are those who would attest
that in amongst the shadows' nest
we'll once more be darkness blessed
