~* The Robin And The Silly String *~

I watched a persistent robin in this morning’s light
rise and fall, so many times in a frenzied flight.
He had a long string in his beak he was trying to lift,
I suppose a treasure for Mrs. Robin, a nesting gift.

He grabbed the string carefully then he rose.
The string escaped, and in mid flight the poor robin froze.
Determined to retrieve that long string once more,
the robin glided to retrieve it on the grassy floor.

We watched as he held the string really tight,
then he rose and flapped his wings with all his might,
but once again Mr. Robinfell to the ground,
and the precious long string came floating down.

So determined was he to bring Mrs. Robin that string,
that time and again he tried to take off with it on wing.
To no avail could he hold it, get air bound and fly,
I swear I could see a wee tear in that robin’s eye.

He hopped up in a tree but the string got tangled,
so he tugged at it while from the branch it dangled.
No matter what he did that long string wouldn’t free,
I think I heard Mr. Robin say, “Oh, woe is me!”

Elizabeth and I were laughing so hard you see,
because that long string was tied to the trunk of the tree.
But then again, the robin must be commended,
for this isn’t near where this story ended.

He flew away and came back with a new thought,
I do believe that robin knew the string was tied in a knot.
He jumped on the branch where his trouble had started,
Undid the knot, and soon he and the string departed.

I guess there is a morale to this story which is partly true,
and it’s don’t give up when you think you are through.
Just keep on plugging and give your troubles a rest,
Walk away, take a break, then go back and do your best.

~*~

Elizabeth and I watched out the window this morning as a robin tried to fly away with a string attached to a tree trunk, and it was so funny so I had to write about it.I finally cut the string into pieces for the poor thing after all of his work!

LOL, it reminded me of a big fat crow in California who tried to steal my sox off a clothesline. He tugged and tugged until the clothespin popped apart, and away he flew with one bright red sock. Half hour later he came back for the mate, a gift for his mate no doubt. Aren't birds a riot? Keep having fun, and keep describing your adventures!

This is so cute Sharon.  I'm very pleased you are having such a good time.  This story reminded me of a sparrow 'couple' that I have making a next in a bird house out back. I was watching them this week, as he was trying to get an entire kleenex through the door in the bird house...(she was on the inside).  Well, he tried for almost an hour, without any help from the Mrs., when he finally did get it inside the house his mate apparently didn't care for the looks and tossed it out!  He flew out to sit on the roof, looking so very disappointed. I thought I saw a tear in his eye as well.
Enjoyed your story....Hugs to you both!

My sparrows are trying very hard to find openings into the garage - perhaps we are going to have a wet summer?  Hard to tell...

you keep having fun...keep making notes...something tells me we are going to be entertained far into the next white snow...

Oh what a cute story, Sharon...
I have often wondered if birds and animals have thoughts, as we do...

A couple of years ago, a robin family nested in a birdfeeder which was attached to the side of our garage, where we could see it clearly, from our kitchen window....
I watched as the parents flew in and out of the nest with food for the babies...and I could always tell when the mamma or the dad was nearing the nest with food, because I could hear those baby robins get excited and twitter away...and then I would see the parent deposit the food into their open little beaks.....it was just so amazing...

Thanks for the cute story

Wish I was there with you
Lots of nesting birds in my garden too

We had to cut down a climbing rose real short and after a while I saw a sparrow with a straw, looking and looking, hiphopping around. I think we've cut down his choosen nestingplace too, the poor creature. I felt so quilty.

Enjoyed the poem

You all are for the birds! This was a true picture Elizabeth Santos and I saw out her family room window and it was absolutely hilarious, and I was killing myself laughing as this crazy bird flew and did a flip in the air each time he reached the "end of his rope".  Well thank you all for bearing with me on a quick and silly write, as I am at the mercy of other's computers until May.  Tah tah, now Liz and are off to Cape Code, so have fun, and I miss you all!
