At 16 the heat
from skin steamed up windows
as we in back seat gathering
of clothes and modesty
wished in earnest for
something deeper

I turned from your fingers
opening buttons
and made a heart on window
your initials and mine entwined
curled lip of letters feeling like my need
to be wrapped in you

Even then I knew there was more
than this heavy breathing
the essence of warped mirror fogged reflection
felt inside the epidermal thought

I yearned for you past
the soft slide of seduction on leather seat
to a place far beyond the touch
of skin on skin
or lust on lust
for then and still to relate
as epiphanic cousins

Those nights at 16 we dream still
of timid intimate knowing
and the turns of the coast highway remind me
in the bold way the cliff falls and distributes rocks
into the crashing ocean
of the way we felt standing over our awakening
your thigh against mine

and the sea endless and sure
connects us like forever

-------
Thanks, River!

Martie, Martie.... now why did you want to go and paint that picture? Now I have to spend the afternoon remembering not the coastal highway, but the hill country of Missouri and an old 56 Chevy 4 door that had a wonderful back seat...
Dang it... and I needed to be working...

I'm thinking you did this to torture us and are part of an evil plot to destroy the efficency of the American workplace by placing such distracting thoughts in our heads.. ( chuckling)

Seriously... very nice work!

Oh Martie.....this is fantastic....and do
I ever relate to those moments at 18, not
16....late start....  Those were the days
of backseats and drive-ins....Remember
them well...

a stolen page from many a young love's youth.
Perhaps the essence of good poetry is the ability
to appeal to moments, thoughts, we have all felt.

it doesn't get any better than this, Martie!
I won't spoil the mood of your poem with a tacky response, ok?  *s*

Martie, you take a backseat to no one!

Ah, the wonderful memories of, like Cpat, the back hills of Missouri on chilly, starlit nights in my old, believe it or not, Edsel!

Well, they had big back seats!

Beautiful writing, Martie!

Lets see how many more people we can distract with this today.

Lady, I don't think I've ever read this side of you, but I love it. It was a pleasant surprise to open this.

I remember a beach...but it isn't quite so romantic, though it does involve 16 lol...

loved it as usual..(but I have a problem with the dropping of "the's" and "a's" - interested to know the reason behind that technique?)

Oh this takes me back and puts me in the here and now, all at the same time.
Do you suppose a woman ever lets go of her school girls heart?  I think the right man can tempt and take her there again, lighting the fire that puts a sparkle in her eyes.

Loved the anticipation and the way you tell it Martie~

I just love the coast and its highways, at least when I don't have to hurry. ;o}

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Martie, the day I feel that again is the day I get married again boy, do I remember those heated nights, and seeing that I am not working I may just go read this all over again, and drift on back in time.  Do you hear me humming "Blue Velvet"?
