Town within sight of a smouldering mount
caught in struggles of departure, turn about;
warned of impending cataclysm began to surface
sandaled folk wandered about, no apparent purpose.

Columned, cobbled roads and guttered avenues
news of immminent disaster ruined planned venues
residents of the town continued about their ways
the only ones to depart were those gone astray.

capture the moment, a gigantic smoke stack puffs
smoke issued forth first, it's the lighter stuff;
then lava streams flow forth, of decent porportions
consume everything in their paths, minor distortions?

Capture that moment, listen to the earth
again villagers live at its foot in mirth,
heedless of new puffs from its tireless crest
town within its site, a long forgotten test.

Today visiters witness body casts detected
covered by lava, they were then protected;
preserved for eternity, in fetal positions
testimony of folk who ignored predictions.

You always spin my mind to the about face.

a ocean of you,
what if told you,
what if I said
that I love you
do we dare cross

Ecrivan, a most interesting post.  The only suggestion I would make is to sprinkle, here and there, a line or two of the supposed warnings in quotes...like whispers, or how someone feels a minor tremble beneath the feet...

this type of writing is something I enjoy very much...thanks for the history lesson!

Well, Pompeii is always the favorite choice but it could have been Herculaneum as well...

Martin darling boy this is wonderful writing, you never cease to amaze me, without doubt you are a fabulous writer. This is as is usual for you a vibrantly alive piece. Which place is it? It could be that island off of Crete, the place where the Minoans and their civilisation

You know I absolutely love this don’t you. Utterly utterly perfect. How can you write so consistently well

Balladeer,

I was under the impression that Herculeum was only hit by ash and not a lava run, at least that's what one historian says

Karilea,

Think I work on the whispers at a later date

Pompeii is one of America's favorite as far as American students studying in Italy is concerned..

Diamond..it's a pleasure to add originality to this and any other poetry site.

Lauren...I might have carried forth a little more of the subliminal as Karilea suggests.

Gunslinger,

and we are victims to our own volcanic eruptions

Marsha,

if you get to Italy travel down the boot to the Amalfi coast and Pompeii, you'll enjoy it.
