C drive is currently formatting on the secondary computer. It was due a reboot anyhow, having not had one for about 3 1/2 - 4 years. Yeah, it's been that stable, with the number of blue screens over that time countable on one hand, but needed one from garbage left over from software/hardware uninstalls.

Anyhow, after much discussion with my older brother, who does this sort of thing for a very nice living, I'm giving Mandrake linux a shot. Only experience I've had with that particular OS has been using putty to connect to a friend's unix box for vi text editing and committing changes to a cvs log (I was the area dude for a Mud). Apart from that, I've never messed with linux/unix, so this will be a new experience.

what littel experience i've had with unix has been all positive, so you may find out luck's not needed!

Thanks Chris, though I should have known Murphy would've caught up with me. Yeah, back on 98se until we get more cdr's. I made the mistake of burning the iso's without extracting them to the cdr's first. And even when I tried installing from the hd, I got nothing but a headache. On the plus side, at least until then I can still play the games I like.

Well, gave it another shot and actually got Mandrake Linux (Red Hat based) to start installing. But I hit a snag which I would love some feedback on. The current format of hda1 is WIN_95 FAT32, same with hda5. To create partitions, the program tells me I need a real file structure and am given a rather large selection to choose from. Which one should I choose?

He said, "To get on google and look up File Systems for Linux/Mandrake or formatting for Linux/Mandrake hd and that should give you all the information that you need. Or if you would like to email me the choices that you have; then I would be able to get you more information right away."

I hope that will help you some. Other than that all that I can do is wish you good luck. Right now, he is teaching me to tear apart and rebuild my system... again... *sighs*

Thanks Ladycat, and thanks to your bf for the search strings. Found the info I needed, as well as a few tutorials. This is definately a learning experience, as in my haste last night, I did manage to format all the partitions needed...and then some. I wiped the logical partition which held the install files.

Live and learn, and trying again.

Ok, figured out the primary culprit. See, we have a LS-120 superdisk drive, which was also the default a:. Which was fine up to a point. Once the install images loaded and requested other info from the floppy, they couldn't find it, since the LS-120 is IDE. Solution: dig out our spare floppy drive, hook it up, and set it as a:. Problem solved. Since I opted for a network install this time, the installation should be done sometime this evening.

Hey Chris? Yeah, since Mandrakelinux allowed public download and use of 10.1 Official, it's been really sweet and easy. Even managed (probaly by fluke) to recompile Nvidia's driver to better accomodate my antiquated system. Now all I have to do is find out where one pesky rpm is living which is conflicting with the installation of the december version of Wine.
