I'd already hesitated to download this particular update, and after reading an article in The Washington Post by Micheal Mungrove, I am more hesitant than ever.

So could somebody, (Chris? Ronnie Baby?) explain to me in normal language (itty bitty words, no jargon please) as to the pluses and minuses of this thing.

According to the article, there are bugs that need to ironed out, and the kind of bug ironing described isn't exactly the sorta thing I would know how to do.

I know how to handle a flying roach--

a computer bug terrifies me.

signed,

dazed and confused

I'm assuming for XP?

FWIW - Not as a blanket endorsement, but I typically set my computer to automatically update all Windows' components. It may not be the wisest thing to do overall, but a) it's not bitten me yet and b) i back up religiously, so if something does happen, I'm covered.

Here's the page with the info for it: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Mostly (as usual) it's Windows trying to patch up all the security holes that people keep finding in their software... close one, the techies try harder to find more. Other than that, it's not typically stuff that should/would concern the normal, everyday user.

Thanks.

Sigh.

Sometimes I just need someone to scream "JUMP" as I teeter on the ledge.

Go enjoy your new "software", luvie.

He's Gorgeous, but then, how could he not be?

The "bugs" aren't likely to ever be ironed out, Karen, because they're not really bugs. Some applications and device drivers were written in such a way as to avail themselves of Window's laxity in security. Or, at the very least, to expect said laxity. SP2 closes a lot of the old security holes and, in so doing, breaks some of those applications. A friend of mine, for example, found he could no longer burn CD's after upgrading, and had to track down new drivers. Another lost her favorite graphics program and, last I heard, still hadn't found a solution.

FWIW, I have not upgraded to SP2 yet. Eventually, of course, we'll have no choice because, likely, all future updates will depend on SP2 already being loaded. I'm hoping, when the inevitable arrives, I'll have a bit more time to devote to fixing stuff. I sure know I don't have that time right now, though.

*chuckle*

Just when I'm about to jump, I find somebody next to me pointing out how high we are.

back to square one I guess, and that is hopefully the brick closest to my beloved WINDOWS!

sigh

thank you, too, Ronnie Babe!

Okay.

I thought about it.

And I thought that I've been thinking for about thirty years to finally think about making my own decisions.

So I have come up with my decision.

My decision is "not now"--smile, which translates, if I read Ron's reasoning correctly, to "soon".

Thank you both very much. :supergroin:
