What program are you trying to install?

Is it trying to install it on 'drive z'? Can't you redirect it? When it gives you the box with the drive location, is there a 'browse' button you can use to find the drive you want to use (probably C?)

I am trying to install a paint program, and no it will not give me the option to redirect....could it be a virus? I have a protection program and it comes up clean...but as of this moment I can not install anything new.....

Are you installing it from a CD or downloading it from the internet?

Can you download it to a floppy disc or burn it on a CD before you add it to your hard drive? That's what I usually do...then I scan it for a virus and then install it. I also then have a master in case I have to reinstall it...

Is it PaintShop Pro?

No..you don't need to do that.

do you know how to do 'screenprints'? (Hit the PrintScreen button and paste into a word document and email it to me...If I could see what YOU see at the point you're being asked for the Z drive, I could help more...

I do software support for an educational software company, usually when we see " Error 1327 invalid Drive Z" It is when the computer is attached to a network and they are using a home directory other than C:\, The new MSI installer checks for the home directory and checks for write privlidges to the my documents folder. Check the properties of the my documents folder and see if it is indeed set to c:\.. if it is, then I would download to your hard drive and run it from there. If it is pointing somewhere else click browse and navigate back to the (2k/xp) C:\documents and settings\"your username"\My documents folder, (9x) C:\my Documemnts. If none of this helps. Could be a bad written .ini file that the program is trying to write. Check with the author of the program and see if they have had previous issues like this before.

Jennirey --

Just wanted to say that your post helped me with a InstallShield problem just now, while trying to install my BlackBerry Desktop Software. I'd just made a fresh install of Vista, and had relocated my "Documents" folder (by right clicking it, choosing Properties, and "move"ing it) to my server. I moved it back to my C: drive and was promptly able to install the software without error. Thanks for your insight!
