i'm not sure if this is the forum that i should be in to ask this question, but maybe someone that visits will be able to help me anyway...

i have just purchased a new computer, (an athlon 1.5 GH).  i have a roommate also has a computer, (a pentium III) however, we have only one cable coming in to our house giving us access to the internet.

my question is...do i have to have a "router" (sp?) to run both computers from, or is it possible to use a hub and route the cable through one of the computers first?

if it matters, i use MEDIACOM for my cable internet source...

any help with this would be greatly appreciated...

thanks again

You need to ask your Cable Internet Provider if they give you dynamic or static IPs.  As far as I know, the cable company in our area offers static IPs, meaning to say, it is configured in your TCP/IP thus it will never change.  And they supply up to 5 IPs or each household.  In this case all you need is a hub.  Each computer will be connected on without depending on the others.

If your cable internet provider gives you dynamic IPs, there are 2 things you can do

a. use connection sharing which WIN9x and above allows you to do.  The only thing is one computer will be your main computer and for the other one to work, the main has to be connected.

b.  use a cable/dsl router.  This enables each computer to be connected without being dependent on each other.

ps.  don't get a linksys router, they're not that good.  you're gonna have to reset all the time.  everyone I know who has one is having problems with it.
