Nan recently forwarded to me instructions on how to load and operate WS_FTP, a wonderful program to link my own photos up to the netpoet area that Ron let's me use for my photos.

Well and good and it works!  Hooray!

BUT.  Here's the question.

Whenever I run the program, my machine does not want to "turn off"/"shut down"/or in any normal way, log off appropriately.  When I don't use the program, I can shut down my machine just fine.  When I DO operate the program, I cannot get my machine to turn off [Windows XP / HP Pavilion mx70]

If this gives anyone enough information, What am I doing wrong?

that's easy!
ws_ftp interferes with the ACPI power service in windows XP. the makers know about the problem but you're stuck with it until the next build comes out. you might want to try smartFTP instead - it's free, and works fine with the XP / 2000 kernel.
additionally, it has an online smart installer, so it will only download the files it needs for your specific system - kinda nice if you only have dialup.

The only problem with freeware/shareware programs is that they tend to fall a little behind the bleeding edge. Assuming you downloaded the latest WS_FTP release, I'm guessing the developers just haven't tested it well enough with XP yet. If you DON'T have the latest version, 7.5, that would be the first thing you should try. They "claim" it works with XP …

Here's one possible "trick" to try. After you close WS_FTP, open up the Task Manager and see if it is still running. Chances are it still is, which is what is locking up your system. If you see it, click on it, then click on the Close button. And wait patiently, because it may take a little while. (In older Win systems, you could get to Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Delete, in older NT systems, you could right click on the Task Bar, but I think in Win2000 and probably XP you'll have to find it in the Start Menu under Programs/Accessories/System Tools. TM essentially shows you all the "processes" currently running.)

Finally, if those don't work (or are too much trouble), you can always try another FTP client program. With any luck, Chris or Sharon will stop by and tell us what they are running under XP.

Here's a link to a TON of freeware/shareware FTP tools. You'll find the link to WS_FTP 7.5 there if that's the route you want to take. The only other one listed that I've used is CuteFTP and it wasn't bad at all. Or, wait for Chris or Sharon to make an entrance …

or - you can just use the built in functionality of your Internet Explorer ftp capabilities. Where you would normally type in an "http" web address, type the "ftp" in and it'll work pretty much like your Windows Explorer.

I use a WYSIWYG program called Splash! It came out a few years ago and has only had one upgrade. It works with XP. In fact unti this moment, I had no idea it shouldn't!

I know I upgraded Norton Anti-Virus because of my XP but never thought that my Splash! FTP wouldn't work - but hey! It does!

Try FTP Manager Lite. It is an excellent free FTP and SFTP client software. The clean interface is super easy to use. It will perform your files transfers quickly and efficiently. One of the best freeware FTP clients that also supports FXP.
