                 Butch

It was the tariff imposed upon by the sheriff
that caused the small tinseled town to revolt
it was the double slotted tongue of that daring mental devil
Like Butch Cassidy high tailing it straight into the sun
and the people of small time small town
had to put their ears to the ground
to here the sound of the bulldozering politicians
whose big business was franchised by a big screen TV
and the billboards went up
and the trains started running with coffee in every cup
and the night before last
   we had our doors unlocked
and the animals roamed freely until the freeway excavation
           and they uprooted the scenery
and down the timeline grew a skyline
the traffic’s like world war III
from stop sign to stop light
there’s a cop on every block
writing tickets based on our history
history that now includes a doomsday clock
to show at what time man would progress too far
which to me has already come
it’s in the picket fence to barb wire setting
that's changed plowshares to guns
and the last crack of dawn met commuter traffic
with a taxi down the runway
your applied to a demographic
and with the first big chain that settled shop in town square
they drove out ma and pop
without remorse
without a care
and our little pond
felt the first nibble from the shark
and right off the bat
the bite was far worse than the bark
and diversity grew rampant
and the census report was censored
with the cities cynical intent
of the age long remembered
as small time small town
like a place that needed changing
but if it’s not broke it’s not fixing
your only re-arranging
the skyline that stood fine
with corn stalks and grains
where now strip malls and outlets
take from their weekly gains
and Butch now travels highway 80
under the fake canopy of the Great Plains

A good write, young poet!  Encapsulating a period of time so well...methinks I'm going to watch for more of your posting, and will look forward to your responses, as well...

seems like you've got a lot to say - and know how to put it there for us to ponder.  Thank you!

Karilea - if I whisper, will you listen?
