The Journey, Part III

Ginger’s Challenge
20. If I Could Write A Column

“Not everyone wears gold…but are silver
in nature, quick and mercurial,
and needing treasures of their own…”

A family sojourn, planned for June, just after school let out,
just before “the wedding,” just before fledglings fled
the nesting grounds,
and the southern route to South Dakota saw the trek
of family winding away from salt, surf, fog,
to hills and valleys, sights unknown,
but the carpenter felt again a pull of home,
as mother sighed for her brood was
captive unto her,
and the magic, held.

Too soon the plains of South Dakota bore again feet
of its own, and all things were familiar if
only from stories, aunts and uncles never met
warmly hugged, greeted, patted and held,
a full gaggle growing larger, larger,
the clucking and chucking of love of blood
bonding tighter, stronger…redder…

on the porch late that evening, the carpenter man
sat with the daughter/engaged woman, as sky-fire
danced across the hills of Lead,
and they, being so high
that the thunderheads skipped across their horizon
directly before their amazed eyes,
a showcase of fireworks
just for them,

as the carpenter’s roughhewn, bruised in nail
and scarred hand reached for that
of his woman/child, a last hold,
each to each, in touch with wonder,
and she thought “this, is how he will always feel,”
and he thought, “this, is what I will be giving up,”

as full throats of unspoken words hung
in burning trust of silence,

as the daughter held before her, the whole world,
in her hands, before her eyes, vowing,

~ forever memories ~

knowing tomorrow, he would show her for the first time,
where he had once trod, how to miss the burrs,
allow her the freedom of the horse-spirit,
and she would learn why
he had never wanted to leave

~*~

and this is why there is

a sketch of time beneath my hand
which may unfold

in Ginger’s column.

~*~

Kari,
if you wrote a column like this, I would never want to stop reading.

as full throats of unspoken words hung
in burning trust of silence,

so touching and endearing...i love these moments...

a favourite line from Harry Potter #1 for me is "Harry couldn't speak but Hagrid understood"...the lines above are that classy too...

That you would share in Ginger's column a moment I will only ever dream of but yet experience through your writing means more than you will ever truly know. Thank you sweet friend.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
