Night folds

So quickly the night folds up the day
Taking each shadow’s crease
Slipping in across the porch until
Only the front door holds the sun

From the rocking chair where I watch
This sun-gladdened day seeps across the front lawn
And weaves across the street
As children’s voices start to quarrel

I hear the wind around the house now
It is the sound of afternoon’s closing door
A moan as time moves through the changing
And eats minutes and I can tell it hurts some

My skin is closing now too
Folding into the comfort of clothes
Pulling itself closed with fingers that fumble buttons
And flannel that has become fragile with soft

I watch the last shouting child curve fast
Around the hedge
Until there is just a piece of blue
Then the screen door slams and lights go on
With just a flicker of family covering the window

Watching has made me remember
When children held my skirt and called out
As the afternoon chaos swallowed the day
And that too hurts some

I remember...and as before
you brought the neighborhood home
to my ears,
and left the magic behind
in a whisper...

Such simple, simple words, and so absolutely loaded with depth and dimension. You're a treasure.

Martie, I can't remember if I've told you or not, but I can't seem to read a poem of yours just once. If I don't read it over again while I'm at it, I go back a lot of times to just read. There is always something new that I find each time I read over them. I could never begin to tell you a certain part that I like the best, unless I typed the whole poem over again. It seems as if there are little gems you hide within your poems. Do you do that on purpose, or is your writing so excellent that it just happens? You really do amaze me, Lady.

Heart Hugs,
Ethel

Time stands still when I read your words and always, always I am captured for a moment by memories that you bring to life so vividly.

Yet I revel in my children's little ones repeating that same wonderful experience... This is a lovely poem, Martie...

lovely Martie...I seem to remember (thanks to you) but I also remember from the kid's perspective - when I lived with my grandmother and she sat in the rocker...

neat.

always so delightful... for some reason our minds must run the same trail. I write a poem gem and flip over to passions (read all your stuff) to post it where I find you have already written all my words (heart). love from Idaho sis.

While I was reading I thought 'is this an older poem'? And I can't tell from the date...it could mean April 2nd, or April 2002...

I'm all confused...lol...

Unless you've had a shift in style...

as usual Martie you're the queen of imagery...

(sigh) Oh Martie, this is wonderful, sweet friend, I always love your gorgeous imagery in your poetry and could imagine the children hugging me and asking me to play with them and I giving them hugs when they feel sad. (kiss on cheek! God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Martie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
