Suppose I said there was a war.
And no one knew what it was for.

No one said why it was they fought.
Or from what region they were brought.

For no sage or mystery.
For no page in history.

Good gentle men prepared to die.
For no apparent reason why.

But fight with guns, knives and swords.
For no one and no awards.

One brought his comrades arm to him.
For nothing but a foolish whim.

The soldier cried - most aloud.
Leave it with me for my shroud.

The other ran with shoeless feet.
Over bloody trampled meat.

He sang a song of victory.
Most aloud - no one to see.

Aghast at corpses all around.
He finds a rifle on the ground.

Holds it to his ringing ear.
Now the angels he can hear.

And horses ran without their men.
Into nowhere - somewhere when.
