I Did The Best I Could
By: Noah Eaton
3/30/03

Twiddling your thumbs, murmuring aimlessly
Like the pendulum on a clock, your minds oscillating
For so long I stayed up all night
Making sure you had company
I seem to identify with all your scars
Hugged you as you were perspiring
The blue eye shadow above your eyelids
You used to hide your bruises nervously

Heavy-handed, inside-out
Prostrated to the point you could never walk around
Your heart is proselytized
And deep inside faith is something you can’t decide
Just another roulade of roundelay
I was always awake through the night
Sat on the couch and listened to the radio
And fell asleep the time I saw daylight

I couldn’t leave you alone
Just wanted to make you feel at home…

I tried to read you like an open book
Being broken and misunderstood
I did the best I could
I stood by your side
Hated to hear you cry
I did the best I could…

2 A.M, with your eyes pale and bright
Like a pagan praying at the shrine
You just needed an angel
To carry you while your intentions went blind
Just one more prayer
Another tourniquet
Thinking about the circumstances
Trying to push you back from those regrets

I couldn’t leave you alone
Just wanted to make you feel at home…

I tried to read you like an open book
Being broken and misunderstood
I did the best I could
I stood by your side
Hated to hear you cry
I did the best I could
I kept the night light on
And sung a fragile song
I did the best I could
I tried to set you free
Eventually you will see
I did the best I could...

When you're alone...
......Do you ever feel at home?

I tried to read you like an open book
Being broken and misunderstood
I did the best I could
I stood by your side
Hated to hear you cry
I did the best I could
I kept the night light on
And sung a fragile song
I did the best I could
I tried to set you free
Eventually you will see
I did the best I could...

I did the best I could...
I did what I should
I did all I could...

I like the title! I LOVED THE POEM! I LOVE UR WRITING STYLE! Keep it up! The poem kept me interested the whole way through.

Where you look for broken hearts...you'll find me...
mend my broken heart and love me
because I forget how to smile.

Noah,

Wonderful poem. Reads so well.

I like:

"Like a pagan praying at the shrine
You just needed an angel
to carry you...................."

And,

"I did what I should
I did all I could"

You always will Noah, loving friend that you are....you'll be there for her and any other you might help.

Lovely poem,

Hugs, Pat

Hello Noah

I felt so much sadness and strong emotion throughout your words.

(big hugggsssssssss) Thank you everyone for your very caring responses, I wrote this after hearing from my cousin in months, who is feeling more depressed lately and was raped when she was ten, and for years I have tried to comfort her to the best of my ability but know I will never understand all the pain in her and that is a heartbreaking fact to me!

Love,
Noah Eaton

I believe that all good people, and you are certainly one, does exactly that.  We do the best we can, the best we know at that moment.  Good write!!  Ken
