Behemoth Radio
By: Noah Eaton
3/28/03

Students, here’s your 20th Century history review test
Question One: What did Sinclair Lewis used to say?
Can you please repeat the question,
my mind has been spending half an hour in a hundred cathedrals,
and my knowledge of the material has withered away
Thought we wouldn’t have this in America
Book burnings, broken windows and oligarchy
They call this the land of the free
When we used to take pride in our history…

Next thing your Dixie Chicks CDS
Are crushed into smitherines
Cumulus Media slaps you in the face
You’re just a travellin’ vagabond on KRMD
And Bush is having champagne
With Tom Hicks and Lowry Mays backstage
As Clear Channel swallows the grass-roots
Pushing all their protestors away

There goes the last DJ…
Like Tom Petty said…

There is poison streaming through the vulture transmissions
Send an S.O.S for the last free American
What’s the use to Rage Against The Machine?
When there’s no watchdog running the tower?

Father used to turn on AM Radio
Listen to Dobie Grey soothe his soul
Seemed freedom of choice was so easy
You were never even forced to do what you were told
Now his sons spend much of their damn lives
Finding a college station through the FM static
While the Clear Channel chairman
Pulls at the other end like a behemoth

There goes the last DJ…
Like Tom Petty said…

There is poison streaming through the vulture transmissions
Send an S.O.S for the last free American
What’s the use to Rage Against The Machine?
When there’s no watchdog running the tower?

Meanwhile, the journalists are running down the streets
Being chased by Rally for America colleagues
Before they even finish their claims…
Meanwhile, they hold up the Telecommunications Act
Saying you shall not deny he who must be named
Or you’ll be silenced till you testify to our names…

New and coming artists wait in the coffee shop
By the train station
Patiently to gain airplay
Without circuiting their concert divisions
If the telemarketers provide the greeting cards
Are the provisions offered by the party?
I think the punch has been spite
With some sort of rare disease…

There goes the last DJ…
Like Tom Petty said…
There goes the last DJ…
I think I’ll listen to gospel at the church instead…

There is poison streaming through the vulture transmissions
Send an S.O.S for the last free American
What’s the use to Rage Against The Machine?
When there’s no watchdog running the tower?

Meanwhile I’ll hold this guitar
Keep wearing my Shakira T-shirt
Meanwhile I’ll keep playing
Even when I’m never heard…

"Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..."

Shakira

Noah...  I hear you.  I relate.  I understand and sympathize with you and every musician/songwriter out there who simply wants/needs to do what they are meant to do with their art -- share it -- but have no outlet, for the "channels" are no longer "clear".  Only the future is...  all too clear...  A hearty congratulations and a bravo with kudos for both being you and for continuing to stand up and exercise your freedom of speech and thought for the benefit and well-meaning of all!

Noah, I haven't been here in a while and I sure have missed this wonderful gift you have. This is surely and purely magnificent. I get the point and you did this so well. As always, you shine. Great work.
