I once had a friend named Bill.
Poor Bill was married to
A gal so disagreeable
She was a grade A shrew.

She never took care of herself.
She couldn't cook at all.
She took Bill's money every day
And headed for the mall.

She screamed at him at every chance
Insults, demands and more.
She made him wash the dishes
And she had him scrub the floor.

The thing I couldn't understand..
Bill really loved his wife!
He always told me that she was
The best thing in his life.

He didn't mind insulting rants
Or how she placed the blame.
I saw the love shine in his eyes
Each time he spoke her name.

He waited on her like a slave.
He worked two jobs and more
Then gave her all his money as
She headed for the store.

I wanted to say, "Hey, Bill! You nuts??
That woman treats you bad.
The way that she abuses you
Makes me, your best friend, sad."

"She's uglier than dirt, my friend,
And never cleans the house.
She screams at you and you just take it
Like some little mouse!"

But every time I started to,
Bill gave a little smile
And told me how his love for her
Had made his life worthwhile.

So, with respect to how he felt
I never bashed his wife...
But this is just a fairy tale
It's not that way in real life.

You better believe it!
Abuse is no laughing matter.
I would never behave like your fairy tail wife. I'd only go to the mall every other day! teehee
This is a sad tale for sure
And a short one for a Balladeer!
Enjoyed reading

...and I trust this is not a reflection of your personal life...This "Bill" is a mouse, but you've got Balls, eh Deer? --no one would be able to treat you that way and live to tell the tail, I mean tale---which, might I add, you told quite well!

Are you sure? Fun write Michael.

Earth Angel...well, I hope i have them! Like they say....what's the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts? Beer nuts are $1.98 a pound and deer nuts are under a buck!

Thank you both for responding.....even if the meaning of the poem went untouched

Larry..I ain't even sure of my name! Good to see ya....

dang! I need to find me a man like that!

I suppose though I'm too much of a softie to treat someone like that...of course, according to my ex-husband's friends, I was exactly like that...go figure. I guess he needed an excuse to explain why he was with another woman

Yep, in real life, the bashers most often are the ones who fail to recognize their own shortcomings and react the most stridently to phantom bashings to their own self-perceived idyllic home-life.  But again, that is real life and we all know we live in a fairy-tale world.

Michael, you may think this is a tale, but I know couples like this and it ain't pretty! There are men who treat their wives this way also!!

No matter what your subject matter, I love the way you write.

Hugs, Marti

It's amazing how different types of personalities can interweave within relationships. What appears hurtful from the outside looking in, may indeed be so -  but - what appears loving from the inside looking out ... may in reality, be a fairytale worth having for some.

Written rhythmically and eloquently as always, sweet poet ... ever a message in your flowing words.

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

Beautiful ironicle verse you wrote Deer, one that makes you wonder and ponder.

Hi Ballader,

I realize there is a message in here and it is a good one, but I really needed the smiles, thanks so much.

Thanks to all for the replies and the smiles. Actually, there WAS a point to this, as cerenity was sharp enough to see.

We all have things we love or admire in life...things that others may not like or even despise from their point of view. If someone is a true friend - even if they can't understand why we feel as we do, they will not criticize what we admire based on their respect for a friend's feelings. A friend does not knock a friend's choices. A friend does not insult a friend by stating his choices are ridiculous. These are not acts of friendship...

...but, as I say, these friends only exist in fairy tales. Real life is obviously much different..

Real life certainly IS different... most of us ugly 'uns can't find love even when we're sweet! LOL (And I'm not sweet very often. *G*)

I think there are times when we should fight a friend's choices tooth and nail... I know I'm grateful for those who did some serious booty-kicking when I was trying to self-destruct. *S*

But there are other times... *S* And in those times, it sure would be nice to have a bit more of a fairy tale ending. *S*

For the smiles and the soft sermon... thank you. *S*
