Sometimes things get over-complicated
like my sister's logic, that I would have gladly traded.
"Don't mix the milk!" was her charge to the house.
And trust me, it was louder than my spouse.

Sis had it rough as a child no doubt.
Her view of the world left her the odd one out.
Never more evident in her peculiar cry,
"I know you mixed the milk--tell me why?"

You don't get what I'm trying to say?
It's a family thing you know, but I'll explain anyway.
Simplicity was the exception in our humble domain.
"And don't mix old milk with new, you lamebrain!

How can you live with this clash of flavor?
Each 'Elsie' must stand alone, the better to savor."

I strove to glean the meaning in her persistent command,
but hey, life's complicated, you understand.

Sis' life has gone on from bad to worse,
diabetic, schizophrenic, and an out-of-work nurse.
Still, she can cut through life's foibles and clatter.
And I stopped mixing milk, 'cause it just doesn't matter.

The older I get, it becomes easier to see
that freedom from order can truly set you free.
Sis had a jump on the answers in life,
and I miss her eccentricity as I struggle with strife.

I think of her often and smile deep inside.
Whenever it's possible to sit by her side,
I find my way home to be taught once again,
not mixing the milk is smart to the end.
Dedicated to Mary Margaret Williams.I love you Sis.

Walter, how very blessed your family is with such a loving son, and brother. I'm sure you are also a loving father as well. You have such a warm and caring heart, and it is so evident in everything you write, especially these poems about your family. Your sister I'm sure feels this love, and it is a great comfort to her. You never cease to amaze me with the warmth of your words.

Thank you Anne.  My sister is definitely a hoot.  I love her to death.
