Flying Fish

Last night in a strange neighborhood
Of narrow, short and ill lit streets
I saw a restaurant open -
Or so I thought - with door unlocked,

And bright fish of paper mache
Flying on curved tracks overhead.
All the tables were clean and cleared,
The waiters weary and hungry.

But they fed me from left-overs
And what they had planned to take home.
Food not to my taste, but offered
Freely by those in greater need.

After I finished and gave thanks,
I left, knowing I would not see
That place or neighborhood again,
But richer knowing it exists.

not so lightly to be caught
