A Simpler Time (Homesick)

I'm finding myself getting homesick
And not for a place but
For an era long since gone by....
When the streetlights were our watch
And you had three sets of friends
Yard
Porch
And House.
It took me a while to understand what that was all about
but now I do, and I'm glad.

Do you remember?

A time when a Hot Wheels track was both good and bad!
When Grandma was the best friend you ever had and
A pinky swear was a bond that held like Krazy Glue.
Can you recall when love was as simple as one, two, three?
Check the box...
Yes
No
Maybe?

How about when "cooties" was the worst disease known to man
and you became a street Picasso with a piece of brick in your hand.
You became the Alpha Male by how fast you could run and it was still safe to play with toy guns.

Do you remember?

When girls were yucky
and boys smelt funny
And your biggest concern when it came to money
was...
"Can I be the Banker!"

How about when all battles were settled by the Dozens
and even though you were just friends, you told everyone y'all were cousins.
Their mom was your mom and yours was theirs.

Do you remember?

I'm homesick for...
Saturday morning cartoons
Barbie Underoos
Boston Bake Beans
Right On Magazine

You have to remember...
The simpler things.
A simpler time.
Eons before war, bombs, and land mines.
Before friends died
and diseases created the long good-bye.

I just want a glimpse of old times, once and a while
Because nowadays I cry much more than I smile.
Constant attempts to be everything to everybody
has caused I to lose sight of who is really me.
Did that make sense?
Stress has caused me to be unable to make a sentence.
Having it all together is just a pretense.

I just want a quieter time
A safe space with a peace of mind.
Because everyday life is making me sick
or should I say...homesick.

Candii - this is awesome!  Right here:

Stress has caused me to be unable to make a sentence.
Having it all together is just a pretense.

Everyone is so uptight - I remember the biggest worry was being home before the streetlights came on or a car would come down the street during kickball . . . God to be a child in THAT time . . . very nice - you brought me back xxoo

Candii, This is absolutely phenominal. It is by far one of my favorites that I hav seen on here. I remember those times well... Having to be home before the street lights came on, and in the summer, playing Hide N Seek or kick the cans in the neighborhood once they did, and Mom knew where I was...
I am severely bummed that my kids can't live by laws of that jungle...
I am looking forward to more of your talent.

Imagine all the People living life in peace...

My simpler time I think is earlier than yours. I wonder if kids brought up today will feel this desire for a simple time in a few years. Nothing seems simple for them now.

I enjoyed your poem very much.
