Saluting with misty eyes

0 posted 2003-03-15 10:10 PM

I saw you again today
Lying there
Rest Eternal
Snow covering your face
Yet you knew not
And cared less
We stood there all
Collectively in our thoughts
Marines all
Our Business done
All matters attended
Each in our own
The honors given
Salutes all around
No command given
The respect due a Brother
Honored Warrior
Until next time, Sir
Semper Fi

I went and saw my father again today while conducting business near the National Cemetary where he's buried. This past week was 5 years since his Final Posting, and it was an especially calming visit with my friends there to share the experience.
BTW, Semper Fi is an expression used by Marines to one another. It's meanings are too numerous to delve into here.

He might not have known the snow on his face, but I'm sure he knew you were there...

glad you got to visit.

I think the key words here are: Honored Warrior. How good you had others with you and were able to feel serene and peaceful.

Thank you Ringo, for sharing this...
I have worked alongside a Marine, and know the various meanings of Semper Fi...

I married an Air Force Pilot...
and know the meaning of honor.

I salute all of those who have given of themselves to our country.

Excellent.  You caught the moment, with all its implications; trapped it like a bug in amber... that's the best thing a poem can do.
