Listening to every heart

0 posted 2003-03-09 09:37 AM

Leave Them Be…

Fancy is as fancy comes,
But leave them be, for me.
Who knows when the electric outs
Or when wind calls forth, “come be…”

Leave alone these lines to sing
Leave me these vestiges, lank,
Leave to me the call of spring,
To stand in sun’s full ranks

Let me stand in streaming light
To lift the sheets to air,
Let me clip and relish youth again,
And remember mother, there…

These lines and poles are not for fishing,
But possibly have seen some wishing
For accoutrements of better times,
But if you listen, the songs have lines…

So flap me breeze, and sun my sheets,
And fluff my towels with spring
I shall stand in blades new grass
To hear again, mother, sing…

I surely remember my mom carrying loads of clothes out... hanging them with clothespins... and how great everything smells when it's dried in fresh air... Yep.. Leave Them Be.... ...

Personally, I would be lost without my clothesline..
Nothing like the smell of clean wind dried sheets.
Gee..I love this Karilea..and the pic!

Karilea - It was a sad day when my hubby cut my t-posts down. But, at the time it had to be done as we owned not one, but two dobermans who just loved playing with the freshly washed laundry!!lol. Great read this morning. hugs,Chris

Talk about digging up memories!
It almost makes me want a clothesline again,
though hangin stuff out in the CITY sure  doesn't give you 'fresh' scented sheets.
I hung kinetic sculptures, wind chimes and potted plants from mine too.
Christmas tree decor was visible one year when I didn't have enough money for a tree.

Oh Karilea, the memories this brought to me. I have been sitting here daydreaming of days when my grandmothers, aunts and my mom dried everything outside. There was nothing like that clean, air-dried smell. But the towels were like sandpaper!

Hugs dear lady and great pix.  Marti

Awww sunshine, it was so sweet. I like to laeve things as they are. I let mushrooms grow in my garden, and leave the leaves in the grass in the fall. But clothes are another story.

the Wind is invisible.

Your writing brings forth images we all hold and cherish, but long for your expression to bring it to mind.  Beautifully written.  KJ

Wonderful poem, Karilea. Not only did my mom hang clothes out, but I had to do it, too. I remember those days well.

Sunkissed sheets, what a lovely image. In Australia we have the sun and the wind and we plop our rotary washing lines in the middle of the yard.lol.
