A Memory – To Now

Way deep down in cavernous hole
Where black would be the devil’s goal
Searchers went forth in quest of seek
Lit the way for all others meek…

Cactus, Candle begin the slope
Well-placed lights will curl a mind’s hope
Perhaps the steps won’t fall too far
Way down here finds a lack of stars…

Who would imagine such a pool
Colors glorious, are depths jewels,
Mirror, mirror, on oh this wall…
Please do not let my footsteps fall…

Hush of breath and still we will roam
Down the trail into catacombs
Blessed light leads us forward, on,
These colder climes will claim no dawn…

At walk’s end to find Ruby’s Falls
Sheer are the heights of these fine walls
Chilled air cool though awed are our minds
Of visions grown before mankind

I found my way back here again,
Though ’80’s saw my person then,
Should war break out, where might we find
Security and Peace of Mind?

First it was beautifull, then it was frightening. Thats how caverns are. Imagine having to live in one. And the day you return to the land, the sun would be so  bright.

the Wind is invisible.

i have a more platonic interpretation, the entrance into the cavern supposedly with light, but only upon exit are the forms seen. why indeed must we descend to find security and peace of mind?

Karilea - amazing! the last photo gave me chills. So did your wise words. Caverns have always frightened me....until now. hugs this windy evening, Chris

I've never been to Ruby Falls, however, I have been in a few wild caves, and you have described my thoughts and feelings about being in them quiet well, and quite beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Some decades past, I saw a movie, and I haven't seen it since - I am SURE I saw it then - although I was but a youngster, a B&W "b" grade movie, of people having to move to the underground to survive the war.  This was not in individual basements/shelters...this move was into caves, and caverns, such as Ruby Falls...but everyone became blind...like moles...because for the duration, there was no sunlight, there was no warmth, but they survived [like cockroaches...]

That movie has been in the back of my mind ever since...and probably why, to this date, I don't watch much Sci-Fi...

At the time this movie was made, I am sure that Ruby Falls was in the process of being "discovered" [yes, folks, it was most likely THAT long ago] and I can see now how movies of its ilk were made...there is beauty down below...much of it still undiscovered, I am sure...

I am not quite sure why I ended this poem as I did...perhaps it is the underlying "wait" we are all going through...however...

if it comes to a time where I find myself in the dark?  I know I will be digging my way out back to the light...

May we all find our way in the days to come...

I have discovered that I simply like that way you arrange your words. I'd have a difficult time picking which of yours I like the best!  KJ

Beautifully expressed, Karilea. Yes, may we find our way back to the light, always.

Karilea, gosh, I loved this. We are a people of hope and it's our nature to continually search for the light.

Enjoyed the pictures and poem and read it several times.

Hugs, Marti
