The Last Days of Winter

                   Sometimes, subterranean sounds are heard
                   in our souls,
                   just before eyes droop,
                   ahead of Morpheus overtaking senses,
what it is, that we would like to
experience, feel, see, know…and think of what
                   crisp
                   means, or how
                   cold
might chill our bones, or what
                   crunch
would feel like, under our heel…

for these things are thought of when you are young
and in a state where nothing seems to
                   change…

                   forgive me,

if to hang on to this season seems but a moment longer,
when white appears pure, and frigid emerges
in order to make me feel alive,

before humid days come again, and I wilt
                   in tepid release,

let me hibernate in snuggle under coverlets
meant for warmth, pretending I am bear,
waking hungry to the scent of spring,

                   when I will pad, barefooted,
sinking into the loam of home, where bluegrass roots
                   grow feet and yards deep

                   but not until
my ice has melted, and white crystals hide
                   in quiet melt,
                   until Snow Queen once again
                   has her way…

                   until then…
I shall watch as angels in white
                   fall to earth
and cover me limbs, in quiet clutch

Exactly! I love the snow! This was sooooo beautiful! ---and on a hot muggy summer's day, reading this poem would most assuredly be a pause that refreshes!

~ May the pristine beauty of a magnificent winter's day be but a thought away...

Warm hugs,
Linda

I feel I should walk on tiep toes outside for some reason after reading this even thought we don't have snow on the ground.   I can dream can't I?  And that is exactly what this poem made me do.  Beautiful images even without the lovely photos.

Hugs to all of the readers...thank you!  The snow is mostly gone, but the temps right now would say "we snow angels could fall at any moment...." and how we need the moisture!

For those who have asked, in the last stanza,

quote:
until then…
I shall watch as angels in white
                   fall to earth
and cover me limbs, in quiet clutch

the "me" is intentional...the person falling into sleep is not cognizant of proper grammar at this time...the drift is occurring...the moment is close when Morpheus takes over...and all becomes quiet...

Mysteria, tip toes works for me...

Elizabeth, you could not have left a better response, thank you!

Maree...from me to you...stay warm...

Vandana, thank you my dear...

sea...thank you...I'm not trying to change your mind, but that's the "full" side of me, if you get my drift...

PS...ah...yes!

Lauren, peace is the name of the game, and as you see from above, me is mine...LOL...thank you my friend...

Linda, I hope you remember what you said, and come back to visit when summer is overhead...and we are wilting...

Chris...I remember my most northern moments in Michigan as fine and beautiful...and summers were just as lovely...someday perhaps I shall see your Canada...

Enchantress, if I EVER leave you speechless, I am sure there will be many poets here who will come and string me up!

JanetMarie, I keep telling you folks East of me, SEND IT BACK!!!!  Thank you, my friend...

Margherita, thank you so much for reading...

Icequeen...I am so glad you enjoyed the imagery...I'm giving up on my rhyme sense...I have a heartbeat that ba-ba-bumps instead of ba-bump, ba-bump, so I'm always a tad off, y'know?
