Genealogy

I’ve come to know my ancestry
Through words inscribed in time
The names and dates, the testaments
That through the pages wind

I’ve been entranced by lives that seem
So far away , yet near
But records hide the truth behind
The birth and death of fear

I can't decipher happiness
On faces marked with age
Or on a child’s rosy cheek
Upon a weathered page

And yet to trace the paths they took
The blueprint clearly shown
Is but a carbon copy of
The footpath of my own

Why didn’t they pass the spoken word
Down to the next of kin
So we would know our painful steps
Are places they have been

The honored lives that passed before
Through bloodlines clearly give
An outstretched hand of courage
Blessing those of us who live

Through history’s eyes we understand
The meaning of their goal
The birth of strength, the death of fear
That touches on my soul

I would have suffered less to know
The soil from which I came
Held needed nourishment and love
Behind a written name

But now I've come to know the truth
Behind the eyes that cried
And understand the sorrow that
So long had been denied

I know the ground and roots from which
My limbs extend in air
Outstretched toward the heavens
In the silence of a prayer

(big hugggsssssss) God Bless You, sweet friend, I too understand many of the tears my ancestors faced because I am mostly Cherokee Indian blood and they were in exodus on the Trail of Tears and so I never deny my heritage as I want to pay my homage and tributes to them and hold their traditions to my heart and pass them onto my children! (sigh) You are a very special and courageously loving person and you will make all your children very happy and comfortable with these compassionate words, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Elizabeth, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Elizabeth,
You stated all that could be said
And took it to your bed. Excellent

this is so beautiful.
There are two people close in my family who do some very complex geneology records and studies. It always had kind of bugged me though, because you just see the name's, but not the life story and battles and triumphs of each person. But with this, especially with the way you ended it (wonderfully) you reminded me of Jabez from the Bible.. listen in a geneology wit just a few words and yes making such a profound impact on all!
thank you for this.

Always, Alyssa

must have missed this before....

well written and insightful
we are the sum of what went before plus what we are now.... I think you illustrate that very well...

I enjoyed
