Making Sense of Love

There is this smell I can’t describe
And one I am eager to taste again,
It teases the tip of my tongue
Like an exotic dancer
Caressing the lonely man’s heart.

If I could compare this scent
I would liken it to the damp after a rainy day
Or a woman after her bath;
Maybe it is fresh baked cherry taffy
Or the smell of my old schoolhouse years later;
Perhaps it is Grandma’s scratch biscuits with molasses on the side
Or the perfume of my teenage crush;
My nostrils and senses search my memory…
Sweet thoughts of lavender buds and white magnolias
Invisibly dance with my emotions
We twirl and twirl under mystic skies,
Yes, I reminisce of love.

Memories can destroy the weak,
But they can save the hopeful,
As I now sit on this high place, overlooking the sea;
Reality reflects off the gleaming water
And returns me to where I started;
That moment of pure pleasure
When a smile was my constant companion
And loneliness a long lost friend.
If only I could be returned to that moment;
That moment before beauty blinded me,
That moment I first smelled and tasted love,
That moment before I lost her.

What a lovely poem this is. Beautiful, yet filled with such a longing. Truly a splendid write.
