the sun came out today
and warmed the earth
months frozen.
the house had been
closed tight all winter,
trapping my vacancy
within its stale
confines.  i thought
opening the windows would
breathe freshness into it,
into me.  upon opening them
i felt the outside
rush in, billowing
the curtains,  rustling
the various papers piled up
on the winter dusted
coffee table and drifting them
swing-sway onto the floor and
under the couch.
almost immediately
i felt the grave mistake of
my plan.  all the lonliness
that was outside spilled
inside, my emptiness
stretching past the
boundaries of the gray walls
and mingling with the
emptiness of the entire
universe.  i was no longer
alone in my house, but
alone in the world.
no longer warmed by the
sun outside my yawning
windows, but chilled by
the cold nothingness
that whistled its
lonely song
through the yielding screens.

seven - oh my, I do hope all is well with you. This is such a lonely write and took me by surprise as I thought it was going to be about flowers and such. Still, it is very well written. Chris

Interesting write... funny but I understand it completely. I wait for that "new" feeling of spring that everyone loves, but that never quite seems to make it through my windows.

I like this:

i was no longer
alone in my house, but
alone in the world.
no longer warmed by the
sun outside my yawning
windows, but chilled by
the cold nothingness
that whistled its
lonely song
through the yielding screens.

It could be the beginning of a novel, that. I enjoyed very much this thought provoking read.

But I love to open the windows and clean out the winter stale! This is so lonely. Go talk to the birds, they're busy, busy, busy. Plant a flower. Talk to a neighbor.

chris,  a bit of an exorcism.  everything’s great : )  thanks...

ice, glad you enjoyed.

connel, LOL!

pilgrimage, funny thing you mentioned talking to the birds.  i just chatted with some the other day.  we shared a laugh over a neighbor planting flowers, ironically enough.  they were going on about how the squirrels had stolen her bulbs the last two springs running.  it seems for years she offered a rather liberal bird feeder in the back yard, but had installed a squirrel proof model some three falls ago.  i had no idea those cute little rodents could carry such a grudge, but apparently they were incensed by the whole ordeal and have been getting even ever since.  of course, it’s just neighborhood gossip from the beaks of a few old crows until i hear it from the squirrels themselves.  thanks for the advice, though!
