You Lost Me There
By: Noah Eaton
3/3/03

Demur, all a sudden, she don’t seem so dangerous
So release that chain on her this instant
If idealism is still the toga of choice for our gentlemen
Then are they really perceiving or are they just dreaming?
What a tragedy to be out of society
Where Oscar Wilde seems to be suddenly
While all the actors and spectators are over at Starbucks
Receiving Tazo blends in exchange for sanity
Independence…well, that’s still middle class blasphemy
If you prove me wrong, then what is this you read?
And we’re all overlooking this comedy
Not realizing we’re in costume for this tragedy
Buddha says “ennui makes more gamblers than avarice,
More drunkards than thirst, more suicide than despair”
And I see the doppelgangers lying dead in the water
Before the protest singer even gets to have his share…

So, mister, you lost me there
All this time, I was over there
Or could it be that you simply don’t care
Because I’m not paying the round fare
So, mister, you lost me there
All this time, I was over there
Or could it be that you simply don’t care
Because I’m not paying the round fare

Seems now you’re already through with Langston Hughes
I’ve dreamt, I’ve dreamed, alas my sun won’t shine chartreuse
Does ever exist a king that won’t connive?
And enunciate those syllables that govern us without contrive?
Where exists the competent portraitist?
Where Edmund Burke can breathe a perennial spring free of falsehood?
While the ivy is growing all around his tomb
Grows all around the alabaster walls
Games over,
time up,
BOOM!
So when did common sense become so common, all of a sudden
When the avalanche crashes, when will a snowflake feel responsible
And make a confession?
While Voltaire is drifting in mid-air, bare,
Impatiently debonair?
And “unity can only be manifested by the binary”
Where that and the idea are already married
Yet you disregard Saussure, with your points being arbitrary
Bearing only the simulacrum of this documentary
Ignore the diachronic approach and play Syncchronic Pictionary
And you lose your turn, your charge is parried

So, mister, you lost me there
All this time, I was over there
Or could it be that you simply don’t care
Because I’m not paying the round fare
So, mister, you lost me there
All this time, I was over there
Or could it be that you simply don’t care
Because I’m not paying the round fare

Ah yes, “the coward only threatens when he is safe”
And we’re the tourists in the jungle, where the lion’s free of his cage
Von Goethe, fly home, you must protect your abode
Until the soil is rich of meaning again and the earth won’t erode
Is this toleration good for you all?
When the acid reflux hasn’t been outdated?
And the fashionable consensus still looks dirty to the housekeeper’s eye
Where even the yellow curtains seem violated
I believe “daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward”
But why all these adjournments?
What’s with all these underpromotions?
Must we read this game in algebraic notation?
And while God is giving all the annotation
Is he joining us all in commiseration?
While the impediments of justice play in hypermodern
Forcing the gambits to make a stand to a freedom post-mortem
Leaving their own souls and prima donnas en prise
J’adoube, make the move, putting a life at bay
While we are all together playing in this open game
Playing to avoid the infamous smothered mate
Come to think of it, this game is starting to get old
Can’t we play peace together as allies
Or let me guess, for you it’s too late, is that so?

So, mister, you lost me there
All this time, I was over there
Or could it be that you simply don’t care
Because I’m not paying the round fare
So, mister, you lost me there
All this time, I was over there
Or could it be that you simply don’t care
Because I’m not paying the round fare…

23,000 posts! I cannot believe mine eyes! Every time I turn around you have added another thousand posts to your impressive tally!

This particular poem was a very interesting journey! I think I'll go back and read it once more to gain an even greater appreciation of it!

Warm congratulatory hugs,

Noah,
er belated congrats?

i confess i don't get all the references in your poem...i do feel your anguish and helplessness but can't exactly pinpoint the source since i'm distracted by the wonderful language and my ignorance....

a note to say i read? and shall keep this in my library to see if i can derive more when i get wiser...
