Visiting Earth on a Guest Pass

Going To The Sky

It's warm out, and uncanny dark
courtesy of the power company
and a transformer that lived on our street
until 17 minutes ago,
then moved out all at once.

I carry a pocket laser for such situations.

Any second now
the crews will swing around the corner
in a din of yellow strobes and walkie talkies;
still there's time.

The little laser's warm in my hand,
the gold tube smooth and
strangely heavy in the dark.

Just me and the stars now:
I'm careful in such situations.
Eyes sweep the warm street,
check the Pleiades just -- there.

Ten feet up, a dust fleck sparkles
as I thumb the switch.
Unimpressed, the light moves on.

It's bound toward the stars now.
Anything can stop it.
Nothing will.

I enjoyed this very much. You mentioned the Pleiades and I have a fascination with Pleiades myself.
