For Beauty’s Sake Alone?

Could it be
that the butterfly
is for
beauty
and a semblance of gaiety, alone,
as it flits about
drinking the nectar of flora,
pollinating those
within the grip of earth

Might it be that
it is not
for a life-lesson
born from an egg
into a worm
that devours all at its
pseudo and true feet

decimating
horticulture
to stuff itself
in egocentric view
to grow fat,
and then
to merely sleep, deeply,
within a cocoon
or chrysalis
drawing itself tightly,
morosely,
until it emerges transformed,
reborn,
to begin its cycle again,
bringing life to new worms
that
will follow
in birth and rebirth
