I met daylight
With road mapped eyes
And too much scary smooth
In me
Not the bottle.

I found the hydrant out back
And drank cold Arkansas well
For my breakfast,
Stripped off my clothes
And wiped down best I could
Before I slipped into
Clean jeans and a wrinkled shirt.

Packed everything back in the truck
About the time the sun truly came up
Over the stone backed ridge on the east
And hit my eyes like straw in a tornado

Damn…
  Scary smooth indeed…

I saw it then, the small track
Two wheels prints really
That cut through the meadow
And headed down the valley
And closed the truck door
Cranked it over and eased around
To pick up the tracks
And see where they led.

About the end of the meadow
The tracks climbed left up the ridge
So I eased the truck into 4 wheel low
And let her idle over the bump and tumble rocks
That pitched you first to
30 degree one way
then dropped in oil pan threatening dip
to pitch you the other.

After about ¼ mile of this
I was hoping there was a spot wide enough
To turn this thing around or I was
Going to have to back down out of here
And my head already felt like the last jerk
Had ground it against the rocks and was now
Dragging it under the truck just for fun.

I reached the top of the ridge
And in a twisted side slip of tires
Avoided high centering on the crossframe
And hit an open spot.

I had to wipe my eyes
Cause I figured I was either now
Into Saint Vitus land and would soon
Be doing jake legged dances when I walked
Or indeed I was dead and didn’t know it.

No, it was still there
Two stories of stone and timber
That looked like it was all angles

I pulled on up to the front
Or what I thought was the front
And stopped the truck.
Didn’t appear to be anyone around
And also didn’t appear to be any other way
To get to this place.

I got out, took a walk around
Confirming there was no other road
Then walked up the door and knocked.

Lacey answered
More red eyed than I was
Wearing an old cotton nightgown
And barefoot.

“Morning.” She said and turned
"Welcome to Tanglewood Trail."
“Come in, I wondered if you’d find this place.”

“Just a minute,” I said and walked back to the truck
grabbed what was left of the bottle I had been nursing from
and headed back to the door.

“You got coffee?” I asked
“Yeah, mind sharing that bottle?” she replied.

Inside was cool and dark
And my heart was turning the same shade
Of pale as the blush of chipped stone
That marked  what looked like
A bullet crease along the stone window ledge.

She laughed when she saw me looking at it
“That was Iambe and You.”

“I had to figure out if it was going to kill you
or just leave a scar for me too look at.”

“Seems you might live, but, now you got to figure out the same.”

“I guess that depends, “ I replied.
“Your note said you wanted to talk, what’s on your mind.”

“You.” She said
and poured coffee then reached for the bottle
to add a bit of snake bite medicine to both cups.

Nancy... soon dear one.. soon...

got them together now... and If I made these any longer they would make me go post them in prose ( laughing) which is probably where they should be anyway...
I promise the conversation in the next one...
and we'll see then if it is an end or a beginning.... or if it is just a spot to let them both breathe a bit...

I'll also promise you a good one for MC....
no matter what... about time these two flamed
a fire don't you think? (laughing)
