Coming down the mountain
something inside me died...

Memories,
clinging to the valley floor
like rows of corn
waves of cattle anchored
to Sequatchie's fertile
green ocean

Mom grew up here
and all her kin
passing years weave undying
tradition's fabric
into Grannie's antique quilt
tucked away
in cedar tomb

Wake up Sequatchie!
smell the day, tomorrows
never linger and soon
your limestone beauty eroding
waters pound basin walls
and echo down through
Raven rock

Up on Grannie's Mt., groceries
empty, recollect the day
when I was twelve
summers long ago
breathed into manhood
soft dell and whippoorwill
sweet smell of rifle powder fill
craggy oak ravines and
pockets full of quail

"A little more, the bream will bite
while raccoon run the trees at night
and Tom and me will be all right
up on Grannie's Mt."

...as the trail faded into flowers
I could not find them all

foot steps of my youth

Rf

You've just taken me
where I probably
deserve to
walk...
