i drive by in my car and i see a homeless man holding up a sign
on the side of the street
"need food, need money, need a place to sleep"
the rich man passes by, afraid to look into his eyes
he just says to himself, "he's just another crackhead wanting money to get high"
deep down, he's scared of what he might see, a man that wasnt dealt the same cards as him
a man that didn't have the same opportunities as him, a man that doesnt have a big home
a man that was laid off from his job, a man that has no family to call his own
i walk up to the store on the corner, a man outside asking for change
i give him some odd change, i ask him where is his home, he replies in shame
and points to the woods, and says "hopefully it wont rain tonight"
my heart sinks,
my eyes stare without a blink
who is the homeless man, someone's father
someones uncle, someones grandfather
someone who once worked everyday for his family
then found himself lost and confused, living on the streets
no family or friends to take him in, the beard is long on his face, no bath in weeks
he digs into the dumpster behind the store for his next meal
the homeless man, what if he was your father, would you feel guilt?

My friend, first I want to say 'welcome to Passions', and let you know that this is one terrific piece of writing here!!! For some of us, who have been homeless, it says it all. And for those who haven't, it will give some very thought-provoking insights. I, for one, appreciated every single line in this piece!!  Glad to have you here!!

Accept these small gifts from my gypsy soul, and let the magik happen!  ~~S~~

thanks alot

i kinda expected this to be moved to the dark poetry forum cuz of the drug-related line. but i hope it stays so more ppl can read it. also, the part about a homeless man saying he lived in the woods is true..a guy on christmas eve told me that. it shocked me.. he asked for change then i said where do u live.. it didnt come to mind that he was just homeless. he looks like a regular guy i see everyday i guess.

A touching write. Sad, especially if children/family included, yet, even for an individual, just as heart wrenching. Happens to people from all walks of life.

Welcome to Passions

Thanks, Pat
