Dream Scrapes

Tabasco was
comfortable,
fitting welcome around Konrad,
holding him
like a womanís gloved hand,
soft warmth encircling,
with perfumed promise
of lackadaisical nights.

He stayed a day longer
just ahead of a night stranger
than any of a long time.

It had been awhile
since he had thought of Jackson,
but now the young manís face
hung over him
in the sultry night,
and he thought back to
earlier morning, when Jackson
had started to intrude on his thoughts,
back there on that road,
where tropical terminalia and bari trees
loomed high overhead,
but Konrad had felt as if he had tramping
down the dusty road leading
to Buffalo Grove,
his heart sounds beating in his ears
with every footfall.

Off in the distance he could hear
steer and pigs, but when a flock of turkey
crossed the road,
for a minute, he was transported
back home.

He thought of Dana, a brief moment of cacao
eyes smiling into his,
as he sat quietly in the small
cafť, a chorote settling his stomach
as the young woman who had served him,
had promised.

Dana did not anticipate his arrival,
not expecting him for another
month or so,
and Konrad wondered if internal circles
that had been spinning,
which he had been pondering recently
was working to bring him back,
full circle,
to Jackson.

A bit of him was wondering
if he wanted to scrape
this kettle before
it boiled over,
because the wall against emotionís tide
had long dammed back the tides,
and he wasnít sure
if Tabasco had ever seen a storm
like the one cresting
inside.

His thoughts began to become
as entangled as if lianas were growing
through them,
choking his look into the past,
or the future.

He pushed the childhood drink away,
motioned to the waitress,
ordered Tequila

and wondered why his motherís walls
seemed to be closing in.

The night stretched long ahead of him,
and he had heard
that the ocelots prowled this area,
their skin moving like engorged snakes,
and he wondered
why he felt
no fear.

But he decided to spend
one last strange night in Tabasco, and waited to see
if calendar circles would swing him back to
Buffalo Grove.

your words continue to weave the patterns and the web. Stepping each leg one on to the right strand..snaring us and our attention...

now... why in Tabasco... do the thoughts suddenly turn to a place long ago and many miles away hope to be resolved or to find closure.... story teller... you have your words cut out for you... let me see the cards you hold in reserve... I'm calling your hand.
