Letting It Out

shall I leave it,
thrashing and
rattling like
a snake in a sack,
or let it escape,
hissing like a
swarm of angry bees
out of a tin pipe?
if I stop to write,
will it still exist
when I am done?
does it now?

Yep, and if that snake gets riled enough to strike, it'll go right out through that sack, like it wasn't there, something that has been done by not a few poems of mine when I failed to write 'em at the exact time they wanted to be born.....

Hi Ed...Many questions indeed, and I guess the answers depend on what "it" is.  Sounds pretty scary, but maybe only because it is in captivity.  Let loose it might only be soft air.

I say just get that poem written! there's better chance that it'll still exist if you write then if you don't!

Enjoyed,

Time for the revealing of secrets......

My son and I were reading a couple older things around here yesterday, and ran into one in which the writer had substituted a picture behind the poem for imagery IN the poem.

I wrote this on the spot for him, to show him what I was growling about when I said a poem ought to have its pictures showing inside rather than outside, and let him see the process of letting a poem out of that sack. We both liked the result, so I posted it.......

It does describe how a poem usually happens for me.

Yer right, Kaile -- that WAS a dull title...

One of the reasons God invented erasers, eh?

--the other being to scratch inside your ear...
