The Odd Couple

They met each Saturday at Denny’s
For a late breakfast or early lunch
Their friendship grew from nowhere
It was a whim, a smile, a hunch

She was a bit older than he
But their souls were aged with life
She had been alone so long
He was alone but he still had a wife

The waitress knew them by sight
She watched them both arrive
In separate cars each Saturday
For a respite from everyday lives

Each was honest about their feelings
They knew this was a one way street
The week was something they endured
Looking forward to Saturday’s treat

She panicked when he was sick
He called to say he wouldn’t show
She didn’t go to Denny’s that day
She was lost, without a place to go

The next week they got together again
But it was different for her you see
She watched him as he chatted on
Thinking ‘please, not me, not me’

Somewhere between the ‘Grand Slam’
And the carafe of juice they shared
She realized she could never divulge
Just how much she cared

Their friendship grew from nowhere
It was a hunch, a smile, a whim
But now it took new meaning as
She knew she was in love with him.

Maybe it is just my mood-- but this gave me such a feeling of sadness.

Great writing as usual Sharon.

It's hard to fight the feeling
and the fear of so much to lose.

I hope you find a balance that
you can live with if indeed this
pertains to you.

This pulls at my heart strings~

I know this, the hesitation and the fear of non-reciprication, the fear of ruining something too good to be true..

Sharon, maybe it's just me, but I felt a sadness in this, too. It's hard for a person to realize they have fallen for someone who may never return that love. And, it would also be hard knowing that if she revealed her feelings, then the possibility of the one thing she looked forward to might end.

I don't know if this is written from personal experiences, but I do know that you certainly did make it sem real to me. It made me want to give her a hug.......

Heart Hugs,
Ethel

It's not from personal experience, I seldom write about me. And it's meant to be sad...in many ways. Thank you all so much for your kind remarks. You are all very sweet!

If it's not about you, you at least must've done the research Sharon.  I'm heading for Denny's right now.  Great as always . . .

One of your greatest talents (among so many) is that you can write a poem, and always have so many people relate to it in some way.  You always touch people, Sharon.  So good to read you.

I had a hunch I would enjoy this and you didn't disappoint me. I was like waffles without too much syrup.
