Jake’s biggest problem with Konrad
Was his persistent
He could be right in front of you
But not there, somewhere else.
Jake never did comprehend
That sometimes, elsewhere was better
Than the arguing, the slapping,
Their mother’s crying,
The fearful looks on the face of baby Dillon,
The pretense of the younger Iambe
To shrug off her surroundings.
Jake was always there in the moment
Needing his brother’s ire to match his.
It was never there.
It bought Konrad a bloody nose or two
And Jake’s spite.
Konrad had realized his escape mechanism
A long time ago, and never knew why
It was this way, he had tried
To turn it off. It was not to be.
Of course the other reason
Jake’s contempt always surfaced, was
Konrad’s given name.
Probably the only thing that saved him
Was that Konrad looked more like
Konrad’s thoughts were back there
in Iambe’s kitchen, while under his feet
was the dust gone to green in soft plush tropical
grasses of Tabasco.
Fertile was the feel coming up through Konrad’s ankles,
Growth was making him feel both
Huge, and insignificant,
with every breath he took,
Scents and sounds
Surrounding him, the jungle shaping
Dana had written of the magnificence of this
Zone, the facts, basic and simple,
But she had missed out on the telling of the lush,
Lusty feel and now, now he could understand
Why the Mayans would draw her so.
Perhaps she had not briefed him
So that his senses would not be overplayed
Hard to tell, with Dana.
She had mentioned something else, too,
About calendars, how the Mayans had not looked
Lineally at time, but circularly,
She had noted at that moment of the writing
Of that note, she could not describe it
Any other way.
But as Konrad looked around, the pinkening
Hue of dawn’s light crept in as silently as a boa,
Began to engorge themselves on the
Flora’s spicy nectars,
And he understood.
It all goes around.
Konrad’s thoughts flitted, back to Iambe’s kitchen,
Back to Dillon, and Jake…
